This post is part of an occasional series where we Take a Trip Back in Time to relate stories and experiences that have happened long before this blog existed. In honor of our third wedding anniversary we have decided to share the story of how we came to be a married couple.
In Oregon, the autumn is always crisp, cold and clear, at least until it rains. I enjoy the fall weather almost as much as spring and the year I met Evan was no different. September found me at Corban College for my second year, confident and excited because I was no longer a freshman. Focusing on school and friendships, I actively tried my best to not focus on “getting a guy”, which as you may know is a big focus in college. Of course, as soon as I purposed to not waste my thoughts by thinking about guys, especially ones who didn’t even know my name, someone appeared who seemed determined to get my attention.
By the time I arrived at the campus dining hall each night for dinner, after working at the Boys and Girls Club, it was near closing time. The throng of dinner students had disappeared and only a few people mingled here and there talking. One night in October my roommates and I sat down at a table with a few random people we didn’t really know. As we talked and laughed, one guy at the table particularly caught my attention. I took notice of him because I was pretty sure he was flirting with me. The next night he found us out in the dining hall and joined us for dinner, and again he seemed to be flirting with me.
I tried not to think too much of it because I wasn’t the only one he was giving his attentions to since he seemed like a flirt. He seemed interested in me, but my roommate had confessed to liking him and the fact that I thought he was younger than me (he was a freshman after all) played against him. His long hair didn’t make him very attractive, either.
Working on a project with some friends in the library a few days later I was surprised when who should show up to help us find all the book we needed, but library worker Evan. He definitely seemed overly helpful to us that night. With our group work finished, I headed downstairs to research another paper I needed to write. As I sifted through books on Augustine, Evan again came to offer his assistance in finding the books I needed. After helping me the best he could, and lingering when he couldn’t, he left the room only to return a few seconds later.
Standing in the doorway he quickly asked, “Are you doing anything tonight?” I wanted to seem cool but could only offer, “Oh, just homework.” Taking that as interest he asked, “Would you like to go to coffee with me tonight after my shift is over?” Here it would be good to note that I had never had a boyfriend and no one had ever really shown interest in me, except guys I wasn’t interested in. But I thought this was a guy I wouldn’t mind getting to know. So with little to deter me other than a potentially awkward evening, I agreed to be ready at 7. We could not have known then that the rest of our lives, now entwined, began together as soon as the words left my mouth. As my roommate and I walked back to our room I told her in a daze, “I think I am going on a date tonight.”
In our next post as part of our Trip Back series, we will head to the Gov Cup, twhirl rubber bands nervously in our hands, and claim that we are not looking for a relationship.
