Update: What’s funny about this post now, is that while I am still 6′2″ and a bit thick, I have dropped 35 pounds since moving to Indonesia from combination of coaching basketball and “drinking the water”, if you know what I mean. Most of my clothes feel big on me now.
Because Indonesian’s don’t generally come in my size (6′2″, a bit thick) I am being forced to buy all the clothes and shoes that I will need for the next 2 years prior to us leaving in just a few weeks. What this has resulted in is spending hundreds of dollars each week on shoes or slacks or socks or shirts… much more then I really want to.
Jess and I have always prided ourselves on being able to live very frugally, buying nearly all of our clothing (even really nice teaching clothes) at second-hand stores (Goodwill, Volunteers of America, Value Village, etc.) or at discount retail stores (Ross). However, I need to have good quality uniforms to where to teach each day (Navy slacks and white button down dress shirt). Since I am a bit bigger, it is not always easy to find the right fit. We’ve been able to narrow the pants down to a slack made by Haggar, but we haven’t come up with a good shirt solution yet. I’d really like a thicker, non-iron shirt (such as one’s found at Brook’s Brothers or Nordstrom) because I’ve bought a few second-hand ones and have really enjoyed them, but the full cost versions are more then a night in a 2-Star hotel and even those are hard to come by. We’re scouring every Costco, Kohl’s and Ross and waiting until the absolute last minute to buy full price.
Jess is going through a similar struggle as she must buy maternity, post-partum, and normal everyday clothing. She’s been able to find some fantastic deals on some great clothing (as long as it doesn’t shrink in the dryer… it was a nice shirt too) but none of those clothing types come cheap either. She’s been looking for a cheap (read: inexpensive, yet good quality) maternity swimsuit and found a good solution last night that we are both pretty excited about. I’ll get her to blog about it and maybe post a picture of this great non-swimsuit swimsuit she put together. It makes me proud to be married to such a creative person.
That’s the clothing situation right now..
