It's probably not necessary to TEACH these things, kids pick up- on it when they're not coddled and "protected" from themselves to death. To the notion about teaching self defense, I'd also reckon that teaching nonviolent communication skills would also be important, very important. I really like your point of view on this subject, and I feel much the same way. I believe that it's better to equip our kids for the challenges that we know they are going to face in life rather than shelter them from it and have them handle a situation badly when the time comes.
