Right now I am sitting in the class that I am substituting in. I have taught this group of kids probably about 10 times now so I am pretty familiar with them and they are pretty familiar with me. They know that I’m that “Army/Marine/Navy” guy that expects them to follow my instructions. And I know their character, at least most of them.
I have to admit that I do not have much hope for this generation. I am sure that my teachers said the same thing about my generation. This just really makes me sad. Specifically I am speaking about the young men. Will these young men grow up to be good leaders of tomorrow? Or will they just be the next round of dead-beat dads?
What gives me a glimmer of hope is to know that I was once like them. But sometimes it is hard to look into the eyes of some of these guys and wonder, “Who will this kid be when he is a man? When he has a goatee and is applying for college; working his first real job; raising his firstborn son?” I hope with all that I have within me that some of these men will mature to be men of character. I hope.
