International Culture Day is officially over! And now, I can breathe.
For the past month of so I have been leading the team at the school as we prepared for March 25th’s culture day. Those preparations brought about a lot of great ideas and opportunities to put my organizational skills into practice, but they also brought a huge amount of stress. Thankfully, that stress is now over. Here was the basic breakdown of the event:
- An all-school assembly (all grades K-12, with parents and teachers) – Jess was the special guest speaker. She spoke on how to live internationally. The slideshow she and I produced for it is embedded in the previous post. She will be writing a reflection about what it was like to give a speech in front of 300 people later. Before Jess’ finale speech, we saw dances and presentations from many of the grade levels exposing many of the cultures represented at the school (mostly Asian: India, Indonesia, Taiwan, Korea, etc.)
- Cultural games – Five very fantastic men (all teachers) took charge of this portion of the day for me and planned out three very successful cultural games for the senior school students to play. The game the students enjoyed the most was one where opposing sides would send one player running into the middle trying to grab a flag (or to touch the flag getter). It game was from the Caribbean Islands.
- Cultural stations – This was the bulk of the day. We organized seven different cultural stations throughout the school where students would observe cultural experiences (such as a traditional Javanese wedding) and eat cultural food (like Indian samosas – yum). Each station was planned and operated by one teacher and three students. I was very impressed with all of the the stations and their presentations. It just goes to show you the creativity of our students!
