Update: Here is the link to the script. The last day of rehearsals & the performance we made even more changes, so it isn’t exactly what we performed.
Below is the short newsletter article I wrote up for the school regarding the Easter play. We performed on Wednesday. This is the first time that I have written, directed, or cut music for. It was quite an experience that brought a lot of little stressors and huge joys.
I’m not sure if I would do it again soon, but I truly enjoyed the writing process. I’ll post the script here soon. I made a ton of last minute edits so I want to get those revised over next week’s holiday.
——-
On the night that Jesus was betrayed… he ate the bread representing his body, drank the wine representing his blood, and washed his disciples feet, representing a level of humility that the disciples had not known before. It was a beautiful, scandalous night which had begun with a meal and like one long, unending day, transitioned through a lengthy time of prayer, an arrest, trial, crucifixion, and finally death.
Performing a drama that pulls all these events and others together sequentially, the Senior School students at SPH-LC brought further understanding of the last week of Jesus’ life to their classmates and even the teachers and staff. With every nail driven into the wrists of Jesus, with every drop of oil used to anoint his body, with every ringing sound made by the coins as they hit the ground when Jesus drove the buyers and sellers from the temple, the actors taught. They taught us how many of the events that led up to Jesus’ eventual death and resurrection were misunderstood by the disciples. They taught us how to better understand these events today, in light of the Resurrection.
Looking beyond the spiritual messages the actors brought, they brought one of encouragement as well. Nearly all the actors were not actors at all; they were basketball players. They had willing given up their practices to rehearse for the play. They showed their love for the Gospel message and for their classmates in doing this. They all deserve much praise and commendation. Well done students. Well done!
